Don't post free dog/cat ads!

I see this all too often when I check in the Pets section of Craigslist: 'Free dog/cat to good home'. While I'm sure these people really want to find their pet a good home, there is a danger to posting free pet ads that many don't know about.

Some people look for "free" animals for these reasons:

  • Food for their pet snake
  • Bait for training dogs in fighting rings
  • Breeding stock in puppy/kitten mills (for dogs or cats that aren't spayed/neutered)
  • To hoard and neglect
  • To use for research purposes
  • To perform cruel acts upon the animal
To prevent any of this from happening to your pet, ask for an adoption fee and also request a vet reference to ensure that your pet will be properly cared for.

Sign this petition to promise to spay or neuter your pet!

There are millions of homeless and unwanted dogs and cats that are euthanized each year in the US simply because the shelters they were in didn't have enough space. That number could greatly be reduced if only more owners would spay and neuter their pets. The surgery is low in risk for most animals and often only takes around 45 minutes to complete (neutering on males takes less time than spaying on females).

If you are in the process of getting a new dog or cat or your current pet is not yet altered, make an official vouch to get your pet spayed or neutered by signing the petition here. Also, make sure to pass this along to anyone you know who has a pet. Think about how many innocent lives could be saved if all pet owners ensured that their pets receive this important procedure.
